Making dreams happen
Why we set up Halcyon Hours
Halcyon Hours is the registered business name and banner under which Helen Dickins exhibits and sells her miniature dolls and toys. Pronounced "hal-see-on", the name was chosen in 1988 when Helen moved from Canberra to live in beautiful Armidale New South Wales.
Mail order
Recognizing that there was a lack of mail order outlets for dollshouse supplies, Helen added importing and mail order to her Halcyon Hours activities in 1994, but her main focus stayed with her hand made miniatures. The mail order activity stopped in 2001 but visitors are welcome to come, have a cup of coffee, and to rummage through the left over mail order stock.
Why Halcyon Hours
The name Halcyon Hours was chosen to reflect both the quiet moments in the studio, and the lack of time for miniatures.
In Greek mythology, the Halcyon Days were days of tranquility decreed by the Greek Gods to allow the Kingfisher to nest. We have Kingfishers that visit our garden, including the Azure Kingfisher, and we have added this to the Halcyon Hours logo on our letterhead, and installed a stained glass window with a Kingfisher motif over the studio door. We never find days for our miniatures, just captured hours - hence Halcyon Hours.
